Rise of the Underdogs!

A real life David vs Goliath…

For today’s blog I thought I’d address the shocks that appear to be sweeping sport at the moment. Its bizarre how in many sports, the old ‘order’ of things has been overturned by the minnows.

Firstly, football: Burkina Faso mounted a glorious challenge for the African Cup of Nations, surprising top pedigree teams such as Ghana on the way to a final which they sadly lost. Still, their charge to the final was fantastic for a neutral to watch. Coming with it has been Bradford’s laughable victories over Arsenal and Aston Villa to reach the League Cup Final here in England. I know that I will not be alone in rooting wholeheartedly for them when they come up against Swansea later this month. Unfortunately, I fear that match might turn out to be men vs boys as Premiership quality shows through.

In the Women’s Cricket World Cup, defending champions England lost to relative no-hopers Sri Lanka in the opening group stages, before the usually laid back West Indians sat up to stun Australia and send England reeling out of the tournament. Both of these teams managed to blot the form books to their significant advantage, most likely because the countries are now beginning to concentrate more time and funds on the female side of their nation’s cricket that was previously neglected.

Finally for today, a look at the Rugby Six Nations, where the main shock came in the first week. In part thanks to an heroic performance by the ultimate caveman Castrogiovanni, Italy were inspired to beat a France team that had just come off the back of a hugely successful autumn series. This was perhaps less of a shock when compared to the others as the rise of Italy has been well charted since they joined the championship at the turn of the millenium. We can only hope that they continue to improve and rugby grows in popularity in the nation.

So, its clear that upsets are becoming more common of late. In fact, I’m not really sure why they’re called upsets as everyone likes to see a bit of giant-slaying (unless you’re a giant of course). Let’s hope this trend continues far into the future.
