Wednesday Debate No.7- Are sportsmen overpaid?

I think he might have more than one reason to be happy- Tiger Woods the first sporting billionaire.

Hey, I hope you enjoy reading today’s debate, asking whether the great entertainers from tennis, football, rugby et al are overpaid. Please vote in the poll below or leave a comment with your view!

Okay- let’s start off with some stats. The highest paid footballer in the world, Samuel Eto’o, earns over £36 every minute, while he’s sleeping, eating, etc. The amount of training and entertainment time spent by Sammy is going to pale in proportion to the time he spends relaxing. It’s the nature of the job. And yet he is paid obscene sums of money. In golf, Rory McIlroy has just sealed a £50 million contract with nike. Surely this money could be better spent elsewhere. Football, rugby and cricket clubs struggle with debt so the frankly insane wage demands of their employees (one mustn’t forget that is what they really are) are practically unjustifiable.

However, some would say that the money is the sponsors’ or the clubs’ to give. They can do what they want with it, and surely entertainment is a noble goal. In fairness, it is difficult to put a price on sporting spectacle. With the potential billions that sport can reach through the internet and television, it could be seen as a fair reward for the services sportsmen provide. Moreover, many highly successful athletes still struggle to earn a living due to their sport’s lowly status.

To sum up, i think that some sports, such as football, golf, basketball and tennis, give too much money to their main stars. I think that more funds need to reach other sports so that they have the potential to grow in the public eye, rather than being contained by the monopoly that a few heavyweight sports can and do maintain.
