Bore Draws

December 17, 2012

England have just finished batting out the final day against India in superb style to secure a draw- but their style was far from enthralling. Bell and Trott combined scored just 259 runs off 616 balls. Whilst this was a smart way to play tactically, it was also a smart way to send the crowd to sleep.

This was quickly followed by what has been conservatively crowned ‘the worst match of 2012’ – West Brom vs West Ham. The two Wests were ridiculously well matched, with almost identical possession and territory statistics leading to 0-0. I simply pity the 24,000 that had to sit through the drivel, true loyal fans.

It brings to mind an interesting point- is sport about entertainment, or result? Mourinho would clearly say that winning is entertainment, but then again he was sacked for that philosophy, so perhaps the most important thing is that the fans have a good time. After all, sport is for spectators in the end, not just the participants.
