Weekend review No.3

December 9, 2012

Hello and welcome to another look back at the weekend of sport.

First into the firing line is snooker– the UK championship is marching closer to a result, and a superb comeback from Shaun Murphy to beat The Captain Ali Carter means an intriguing encounter with the Jester from Leicester Mark Selby in the final. Unfortunately, it’s nothing to quite get my blood boiling with excitement and this tournament hasn’t been particularly interesting, despite Higgins’ 147.

Next, in cricket a fantastic performance from England brushed India aside more quickly than this week’s snow disappeared. At no point did you doubt that England would win the match and Cook is a genuine Captain Marvel who will break records if he remains uninjured. For India, it may be time for them to take a long hard look at themselves, probably move on from Duncan Fletcher and hopefully get back to winning ways.

In football, there was a set of disappointingly predictable results. A flukey win for Arsenal against West Brom was perhaps undeserved, but could fuel a return to form. Chelsea played well against Sunderland to win 3-1, and Torres actually scored, prompting a nationwide rubbing of eyes and disbelief. Of course, the big game was the Manchester derby, which finished an astounding 3-2 after a late Robin van Persie free kick sealed the deal deep into (whisper it) Fergie time. Manchester United are opening up a gap at the top of the table that I believe will only grow. Newcastle play tomorrow away to Fulham, which is very winnable, but I think a 1-1 draw is likely.

Comment, like and follow if you enjoyed it, and I’ll see you on Wednesday for a debate. Thanks for reading.
